The Adi Powell Memorial Rugby Matches commemorates the life and exemplary Army service of a popular Royal Artillery soldier sportsman.

Adi enlisted in the Gunners at Woolwich in 1989. He was a clear candidate for a particularly challenging military career and immediately volunteered to serve with 7th Parachute Regiment Royal House Artillery. Naturally very fit and strong. He served with P Troop providing the Air Defence capability for the 5th Airborne Brigade.

It was whilst at 7 Para his rugby prowess came to notice. His strength and all round fitness were complimented by an awesome change of pace and dexterity with the ball. He played on the wing in 3 Army Cup winning teams, including the match against the infamous Troops Hereford, where Adi scored twice and made the winning tackle in the closing moments.

Adi volunteered for service with 148 Battery 29 Commando Regiment. in the summer of 1999 Adi passed selection for 22 SAS.

As a badged member of the Special Air Service, Adi was participating in an overseas exercise exercise when he was tragically killed in a traffic accident. From that moment there has been a gap in the lives of all those who knew him as a soldier, sportsman and friend. As a soldier, he was destined for high military rank and would have had a trendous influence on those who would have served with him. He was a natural leader.

Adi Powell was hard, fast and selfless - the very best sort of British Soldier. He will certainly be remembered.
