It was a case of cops and ruggers when a team of policemen battled soldiers in a charity rugby match in aid of Help for Heroes.

A rag-tag team of soldiers, past and present, battled a team of burly cops from the Metropolitan Police in a nail-biting match. Veterans from the Falklands War and the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts joined serving soldiers - mostly from the 7th Parachute Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery - to make up the "Fury Invitation XV" team.

They battled it out in a gruelling encounter against the Metropolitan Police Rugby Football Club (MPRFC).

Around 700 benevolent people turned up to watch the game from the sidelines, played at Imber Court Sports Club, in East Moseley, Surrey, on Saturday.

And those that made the effort to attend were treated to a gripping game of rugby that saw the police triumph by just one point - the game ending 32 - 31.

Organiser Ed Cudmore, honorary secretary of the MPRFC, played on the police team and is nursing a broken rib from the game.

Ed, 33, said he estimated that the event raised an amazing £3,500 for Help for Heroes, the Sun backed charity which provides essential support for our injured war heroes.
He said "The MPRFC scored a late try to snatch a win from the Fury XV. The game was played in awesome spirit in front of a spectacular crowd and bright sunshine. A perfect day to help raise funds for an extremely worthwhile cause. I would like to thank all for your extremely generous contributions and efforts to make this day an absolute success, and to raise over £3,500 for Help for Heroes.

Not to be outdone, the charity match also saw the women's police team, the Metropolitan Police Women's Rugby Football Club (MPWRFC) take on Chelmsford Ladies RFC.

The game was won 12 - 5 by the policewomen - making it a double victory on the day for the police.

But Ed, a police sergeant on Scotland Yard's territorial support group, said the results were not important. He said: "This game shows how the Metropolitan Police can work in partnership with the Army to raise money and the profile of Help for Heroes."

Six Chelsea pensioners were invited to the charity event, which also raised funds through a raffle that included a signed rugby shirt by Wasps boss Ian McGeechan and the Harlequins rugby team.
Met Police Commander Bob Broadhurst, the officer in charge of policing the G20 protest, is the Chairman of the MPRFC, which plays invitation games up and down the country.
